The Lake Region State College Lady Royals traveled to New Town, ND for the annual MonDak Pre-Conference Tournament.
It was an exciting weekend that saw the Lady Royals make it all the way to the championship game. First up, was the Dawson CC Buccaneers out of Glendive, MT. LRSC found itself trailing 60-51 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Led by sophomore Steph Millers 19pts and a strong showing of 11pts from Maddy Leaf off the bench the Royals would mount a comeback taking the lead with two and a half minutes to go. They would never give the lead back and would win by the final score of 75-68.
Up next in the semifinals was the defending MonDak Champions Miles CC Pioneers out of Miles City, MT. It would once again take a comeback from the Lady Royals. They would find themselves in a 42-32 hole. However, LRSC would not go quietly as they would make a 28-11 run to finish the game to win 60-53 to advance to the MonDak Pre-Conference Tournament Championship. This time sophomore Telesia Manumaleuga 11pts and Kayla Byrne 13pts would lead the way.
In the championship the Royals would tangle with the Bismarck State College Mystics. A big second quarter from BSC where they would score 31 points to the Royals 8 points would prove to be the difference. The final in this one would be 95-71. Jordyn Worley had 10pts and Kayla Byrne had 18pts.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said, "This was a great weekend for us. When we had so many different players get into the mix and help us with scoring you like to see that. I thought we worked hard defensively and played very well as a team. This team shows a great deal of promise and I look forward to working with this group."
Another good test for LRSC lies ahead as they take on Gillette CC, Iowa Western and Northland at home this coming weekend on the 8th, 9th & 10th.
