Royals Can't Overcome Slow Start Versus NDSCS

The Lake Region State College Lady Royals Volleyball (1-11, 0-2) team took on North Dakota State College of Science Wildcats (6-1, 2-0) in a MonDak Conference matchup. Head Coach Brigitte Greywater has preached consistency to her squad all year but it was another night where the Royals inconsistencies would cost them.

It was all NDSCS to begin with in the early sets jumping out to a 7-2 lead and then a 16-5 lead forcing timeouts by LRSC. The Royals started to play with more confidence in the second half of the set even outplaying the Wildcats scoring 10 points to their 9. The slow start was too much for them to overcome and get back into the set. The final of the first set NDSCS 25 LRSC 16.

The Royals came out with a better start the second, trailing the Wildcats by only a few early in the set. Midway through the Wildcats made their move to pull ahead going on a 6-1 run. Which proved to be the difference in the set as the Royals played them even throughout the rest. The final score of set number two NDSCS 25 LRSC 16.

Despite being down two sets the Royals came out of the locker room ready to go. An early lead by the Royals got the crowd fired up. Mid way through the set NDSCS held a 16-14 lead over a hard charging Royals squad that had dug deep. They would not let the third set go easily. With the score 22-21 in favor of NDSCS both teams were on edge as every point was a hard fought one. The Wildcats took the final 3 points off the Royals to take the set and the match. The third and final set NDSCS 25 LRSC 21 with the Wildcats 3 sets to 0.

Head Coach Brigitte Greywater said, "I was proud of the way we finished last night. We could have quit and rolled over after being down heading into the third. If we can do that every time, every set we have a chance to get things going. We have an opportunity to do just that this weekend with 4 games at the NDSCS Tournament. I want to see us eliminate those slow starts and fight for every point like we did in the third set tonight. If we can do that, we will be just fine."

The Royals head to Wahpeton, ND to play Ellsworth 3pm and Iowa Central 7pm on Friday, then Gogebic at 10am and Iowa Lakes at 2pm on Saturday.
