Colden Hutton was chosen to take over the athletic department on March 9th, 2026, after two seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Lake Region State College.

In the last two seasons, Coach Hutton had a record of 32-29 as the head women’s basketball coach, including a 17-12 record in the 2025-26 season. In both seasons, the Royals lost in the Region semifinals to conclude their season. Over his two years at Lake Region, Hutton was able to coach 4 Mon-Dak All Conference players and improved on wins and win percentage from year one to year two.

Before Lake Region, Hutton coached at William Woods University located in Fulton, Missouri as the assistant men’s basketball coach for one season. The Owls went 19 – 9 in that season which was the most wins in program history.

The season before, Hutton coached at Iowa Wesleyan University located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa as the assistant men’s basketball coach. The Tigers went 27-2 on the year and went to the first NAIA national tournament in school history. The Tigers won the CAC conference Championship, had the most successful record in school history, and had the #1 defense in the country. At the end of the season, Iowa Wesleyan University closed its campus.

Hutton’s first stint at Lake Region was in the 2021-22 season, where Hutton was hired as the assistant men’s and women’s coach for the season. Prior to the start of the women’s season, Hutton was named interim head coach for the remainder of the 2021-22 season as well as continuing his coaching role with the men’s program.

Hutton is a 2021 graduate of Concordia College – Moorhead, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in both Education and Mathematics.

Hutton is also the dual credit coordinator at Lake Region. Over 900 students each semester are enrolled in dual credit courses at Lake Region, Hutton overseas all students in advising, registration, and transferring credits.
